Local marketing playbook
Google ads: great until they aren't (and what to do then)
Google Ads can be incredible for a local Charlotte service business. Real searches, real intent, real phone calls within hours of turning the campaign on.
And then six months later your cost per lead has doubled and your ad spend looks like a car payment.
What usually happened:
Competition got smarter. Other Charlotte businesses started running better ads. Your bids quietly went up.
Google nudged you into broad match. Suddenly you are paying for clicks from people searching things that have nothing to do with what you sell.
Your landing page never got optimized. You drove more traffic to the same average page and conversion rate slipped.
The fix is rarely "spend more." It is usually:
- Tighten match types back to phrase or exact
- Pull a search terms report and aggressively negative out junk
- Send ad traffic to a page built for the search, not your generic homepage
- Make sure organic Google rankings and Google Business Profile are working too, so you are not 100% dependent on ads
